Socialism is dead and buried? And what

This post had to go out a week ago, but it did not go through. Remedy now, so the issue has certainly not lost their timeliness. There is, however, another prerequisite to do: it is true that some arguments can be made only by writing a substantial essay political science, because serious things are serious matters and should be treated as you would expect, otherwise forget it. So an editorial, an editorial, an interview (not to mention a post), the containers would not be more appropriate, but since the papers are there, and that they must have to write something also on the Two Chief World Systems, you may very well pass over certain distinctions and accept that the subject is treated to the good. So here is the editor of the Journal of Renzo Foa few days ago may be useful. Basically, then, he has done nothing but shoot and comment freely on the reasoning of Rutelli, who closed the party invoking the authority of Margaret and Lord Anthony Giddens, has decreed that "socialism is dead and buried" and explained that the very word socialism no longer makes sense in the twenty-first century. However, I think it is worth reading, but without haste, without prejudice to draw conclusions. I least I try.

Renzo Foa Il Giornale, 10 September 2007:

The merit of Anthony Giddens - the theoretician of Blairism - was the first to inform, motivate, and then finally to repeat the word "socialism" has no meaning in the twenty-first century. The merit of Francesco Rutelli is that you have read the reflections of the English scholar, to understand them and know how to use the political debate. He did it again yesterday, to strengthen the sense of his vision of the Democratic Party and to take on the doubt as to his immediate family: a mission that does not mean yet another small evolution of the old story of the Italian and European left, but a real innovation. If the discussion on the cultural terrain on the role and function of social democracy remains open, even if what happened one way in London and Berlin and Paris for the opposite should help to clarify if not to close the debate on the more closely the release of political leader of the Margherita has a precise meaning, look to the international position of the new political entity and tries to point to new horizons in post-communism to post-socialism and post-democratic Italian Catholicism. I would say that the only vision possible, so as not to repeat a story of tears and unfulfilled ambitions frustrated, even at European level, where the "socialist family" is increasingly devoid of innovative capacity. And I would add that is the only sensible response to those who once again, updating it, as did Alesina and Giavazzi, the old formula that only a force that is placed on the left is able to implement liberal policies and liberalization. But I bet Rutelli will not have too many supporters among his fellow adventurers in Pd, where the point of European Socialists, although omitted in the code, it remains an important ideological pillar. And paradoxically it is often for the reasons set out by Giddens: no longer having an effect, does not even have an identity other than in reference to a tradition of nineteenth and twentieth century and, therefore, does not involve any commitment. It is a disposable box that anyone can fill at will. Gone are the good old days of the Socialist saying clear words, when they spoke as Chancellor Schmidt and President Nyerere. We are in the century that has left behind not only communism but also the great battles for welfare. Today the agenda of Europe and the West is, if anything, the reform of welfare. And on these dilemmas, socialism or stutters or adapts to recipes for Thatcher, Aznar or Merkel. As Nicolas Sarkozy, in this 2007, is becoming the model to follow and then imitare.Rutelli told the truth. Moreover, a trivial truth. Besides supported daily by a political debate in which the leadership olive confirm days after days of socialism that nothing remains to be used. When Veltroni is the problem of lowering the tax burden, when Domenici and Cofferati ask police powers, when Giuliani Amato relies on the model they just say goodbye to socialism, also the European, and possession of other cultures, other stories, other traditions. But woe to account for Giddens and say publicly that it wants to steal the company last utopia to build a party capable of being just what it's called, that is distinct from the democratic and socialist.
